The Two Ronnies – Keeping the ‘Joga Bonito’

R9 × R10. Two Ronnies. One Beautiful Game. 

Some football teams win. Others leave an imprint on the game forever. Brazil’s class of 2002 did both. In Korea and Japan, a side filled with extraordinary characters — Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Ronaldo and a young Ronaldinho Gaúcho among them — won seven games from seven and defeated Germany 2–0 in Yokohama to make Brazil world champions for a record fifth time. Ronaldo completed one of football’s great redemption stories, scoring both goals in the final and finishing the tournament with eight, while Ronaldinho announced himself to the world with the imagination, improvisation and audacity that would come to define him. 

The Two Ronnies 

There is a particularly British joke hidden inside this celebration of Brazilian football. In the build-up to the 2002 World Cup, The Guardian described Ronaldo and Ronaldinho as the “latter day Two Ronnies” — a knowing reference to Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett, one of Britain's most loved comedy double acts. 

That coincidence became the starting point for this Goalsoul design.

One Ronnie could destroy a defence with acceleration, balance and ruthless finishing. The other seemed to regard defenders as an invitation to invent something new. Ronaldo made the extraordinary look inevitable; Ronaldinho made the impossible look fun.

Keeping the ‘Joga Bonito’ 

At the heart of the design is the idea of Joga Bonito — play beautifully. 

Brazil 2002 wasn't simply an exhibition of flair. Luiz Felipe Scolari constructed a side that gave its extraordinary attacking talent the freedom to decide games. Captain Cafu later explained that the team effectively trusted Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho to “take care of things up front”, while the players behind them provided the structure and support. 

“Good night from me…” 

The visual language takes the joke one step further. 

The glasses motif is a subtle nod to the original British Two Ronnies, while the familiar sign-off — 

“Good night from me.” 
“Good night from him.” 

— becomes a playful metaphor for two footballers capable of saying good night to a defence in very different ways. 

British comedy heritage meets Brazilian football mythology. 

The Beautiful Game, Remembered 

Ronaldo finished Korea/Japan 2002 with the Golden Boot. Ronaldinho was only 22, already displaying the improvisation and ability to unbalance opponents that would make him one of the defining footballers of the following decade. 

It is a reminder of an era when Brazilian football seemed to combine spirit, style and originality almost effortlessly.
