Rinus Michels took the principles that became known as Total Football and turned them into something extraordinary at Ajax and with the Netherlands.

Players moved. Positions changed. Space opened and disappeared. Everyone understood where they needed to be — and when.

At the centre of it all was Johan Cruyff.

As Cruyff put it:
