Sheffield FC had been founded in 1857. Hallam followed in 1860.

Their first meeting was played under the Sheffield Rules — the pioneering code developed in the city before football's laws became standardised nationally.

The fixture became known as the Rules Derby.

More than 160 years later, Sheffield FC and Hallam still play it.

Football has since created some of sport's fiercest local rivalries.

But every tradition has to start somewhere.
