Andoni GoikoetxeaThe Butcher of Bilbao

£20.00

Athletic Club defender Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga (born 23 May 1956 in Alonsotegi, Biscay) produced one of the worst tackles in the game’s history when he broke the ankle of a young Maradona. He is known as the Butcher of Bilbao and was given a 16-match ban for the incident. It was by no means an accident on the Butchers part as he famously had the boots he was wearing put in a glass case taking pride of place in his living room. The Spanish and International press of the time condemned him, as he'd been walking a fine line after committing a tackle a year earlier on another Barcelona star, Bernd Schuster. The knee injury that Schuster received was serious enough for some to say, that he never returned to be the player he once was. On his return to fitness, Maradona sought retribution. Barcelona were beaten 1-0 by Bilbao in the 1984 'Copa del Rey Final'. After the whistle, an epic fight ensued as the King of Spain and members of the Spanish royal family watched.

'I hadn't seen him coming on the pitch or I would have dodged him as I had on so many other occasions with so many other kicks. But I just felt the impact, heard the sound, like a piece of wood cracking, and realized immediately what had happened.'
