Kempes entered the tournament as Argentina's great attacking hope.

He finished it with six goals, the Golden Boot and two goals in a 3–1 final victory over the Netherlands.

His unmistakable celebrations — arms raised beneath a storm of ticker tape — became defining images of the 1978 World Cup.

But the tournament cannot be separated from its setting.

Argentina was governed by a brutal military dictatorship responsible for widespread repression, disappearances and murder.

The World Cup provided the regime with an international spectacle.

For ordinary Argentines, however, football could carry a very different meaning.

Kempes remembered the victory as something that brought joy to people living through deeply troubled times.

Redeemer '78 lives inside that contradiction.
